Hydro Thunder Hurricane Review
The people at Vector Unit took on the restoration of an Arcade classic. Not an easy task at all but we’re glad to say they’ve pulled it off rather well. Hydro Thunder Hurricane is a blast literally! Watercraft racers were booming in the 90′s and pretty much went the way of the dodo once the decade concluded.
After getting a feel for the control scheme which is pretty straight forward I started winning races. The game features a wide variety of boats and courses that keep gameplay fast, fresh and challenging. I soon found myself speeding through Monster Island dodging reptilian obstacles while trying to snag boost and timing when and when not to jump.
One of the best things about the game is each track has it’s own personality. You will encounter a lot of twist and turns and knowing when to crash through an object or where a shortcut might be can make or break a race. You’ll easily spend time repeating courses to sharpen your skills for competitive gameplay.
Hydro Thunder Hurricane stacks up pretty well against more expensive full priced racers that have borrowed a lot of the game’s core elements. The point scoring system gives you something to shoot for besides just unlocking achievements. The top three spots have a payout which allows you to earn more boats, paint jobs, courses and challenge modes.
In the end the game may not be the best looking XBLA title we’ve seen but it surely holds it’s own. If you’re looking for a fun fast paced competitive and well priced title that can also fill your leaderboard addiction. Then look no further, you might wanna get your Microsoft Points ready now because Hydro Thunder Hurricane does that and a lot more.
Final Verdict: 9.5 out of a possible 10
